ABSTRAC

Diabetes mellitus (DM) did not only occur in the adult age group but was also found in children. There was a 70-fold increase in DM cases among children in the last 10 years. This rise was triggered by various risk factors, including unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, being overweight, and lack of physical activity. However, knowledge about DM among children, parents, health cadres, and the community remained low. This indicated the need for holistic and integrated efforts to provide knowledge about DM as an early prevention measure for the disease in children. The aim of this community service activity was to improve the knowledge of health cadres and parents and enhance the skills of cadres in educating the community about DM in children in the working area of the Lempuing Community Health Center in Bengkulu City. The methods used in this activity were lectures, discussions, and practical sessions. The results of the community service activity showed an increase in the knowledge of health cadres before and after the education, with a score improvement of 3.28 points, and a knowledge improvement among parents by 3.16 points. More than 50% of the cadres who received training provided education to community groups about DM in children and its prevention. The counseling activities conducted successfully improved the knowledge of cadres and parents regarding DM in children and its prevention, as well as enhanced the cadres' ability to educate the community in the working area of the Lempuing Community Health Center in Bengkulu City. It is hoped that education on DM in children within the community will continue to be carried out by continuous participation of health cadres.
